St. Stephen's celebrates 150 years

Members of the St. Stephen's Church vestry gather at the Heritage Center

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church of McKeesport celebrated its 150th anniversary this year.

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church of McKeesport celebrated its 150th anniversary with an October 21 reception at the McKeesport Regional History & Heritage Center and an October 22 service at its Walnut Street church.

The congregation held its first service in 1873 – one year after the cornerstone was laid in 1872 for the construction of a wooden-frame church, and two years after the name St. Stephen’s has been adopted in 1871 for a mission church with 33 confirmed members. Long ago, the church utilized a log raft to help parishioners who lived on opposite banks of the Monongahela and Youghiogheny rivers to get to services.

St. Stephen’s was incorporated as an independent parish on Nov. 3, 1885. Today, St. Stephen’s faithfully serves our community under the direction of the Rev. Dr. Moni McIntyre as an active organization that strives for a strong, healthy community through worship and outreach.
